Our courses are designed to teach the skills necessary to obtain employment in the timber frame industry or for the individual who want to build his own timber frame home. The emphasis in on learning the hands on skills and the theories behind it. Our 12 week course will teach all skills from selecting logs over operating a sawmill, preparing timbers for joinery, all aspects of design, layout, cutting and design of two dimensional and three dimensional timber frame systems to finishing the timbers. This spring we offer a 12 week course. The course is broken down into 3 blocks of 4 weeks each.You can participate in only one, two or all three blocks, depending on your objective and skill level. Registration for 2009 courses is now closed. We will post 2010 dates shortly.
Foundation course Skills required: no previous skills required This course will teach all skills necessary to fill entry level positions in the timber frame industry or build your own basic timber frame structure The curriculum includes: - Wood tech basics - The properties of wood - Grading timbers - Cutting timbers with small sawmills - selecting logs - bucking logs - mill maintenance and sharpening - chainsaw maintenance and sharpening - cutting for grade and appearance - How to interpret architectural drawings and shop drawings - finishing and repair of wood. - use and sharpening of a large selection of power and hand tools. -Timber layout -Traditional joinery including mortise and tenon, dovetails, scarfs, knee braces, housed connections, etc. - Layout, cut, label and assemble the frame work. . - Understand types of roof structures.
Intermediate course Skills required: Foundation course or two years carpentry This course will teach all skills necessary to fill production level positions in the timber frame industry or build your own full timber frame structure. This course builds in the foundation course. It will teach the skills and theory behind it in a deeper and more advanced level. the focus is on: - frame systems, pro's and con's for selecting a system - Understand types of roof structures - All aspects of design, layout, cutting and design of two dimensional - timber frame systems - Wood tech advanced - The properties of wood 2 - Grading timbers for strength and appearances - Improving quality through timber selection - Cutting timbers with small sawmills - cutting for yield - cutting for grade and appearance - How to interpret architectural drawings - shop drawings - finishing and repair of wood - use and sharpening of a large selection of power and hand tools. -Timber layout -Traditional joinery including mortise and tenon, dovetails, scarfs, knee braces, housed connections, etc. - Layout, cut, label and assemble the frame work. .
Advanced course Skills required: Intermediate course or three years timber framing The focus of this course is on three dimensional timber framing - Hip and valley roof systems - Octagon towers - Detailing, hip and valley rafter tails - All aspects of design, layout and cuttimg of three dimensional timber frame systems Location: School is at the shop at Whiskey Creek Timber Framing,10 min. north of Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada, Instructor: Your instructor throughout the course will be Werner Richter. Werner Richter is running a timber frame business for the last 28 years. He was not only running the business but also working on the shop floor every day. He is known as being one of the best in the industry. Every one of his former employees did find employment at one of the other timber frame companies or is running his own successful business now. Tuition: Can $ 2400.- for four weeks Can $ 4600.- for eight weeks Can $ 6800.- for twelve weeks A 50% deposit is due with registration The remainder is due at the first day of school. |
